The Art of the Stack: A Foolproof Formula for Styling Brooches on a Blazer

There is no denying that a structured blazer is the ultimate wardrobe superhero. But pair it with statement brooches? Pure sartorial magic. Learning how to style brooches allows you to reinvent your favourite pieces and create a look that is entirely your own—and always a conversation starter.

Done right, a brooch stack looks intentional, sculptural, and incredibly chic. Done without a plan, it can feel a bit chaotic. To take the guesswork out of modern brooch styling, I’ve broken down my exact three-step formula for building the perfect, balanced brooch stack for a blazer.

Think of this formula as your creative starting point—the real trick is to experiment and have fun with it. Here is how to build a dynamic, balanced brooch cluster.

Step 1: Establish Your Anchor

Every great brooch stack needs a centerpiece. This is your largest, heaviest, or most visually striking piece. Because a blazer lapel offers a lot of structured, heavy-weight real estate, you want a foundational vintage or modern brooch that can hold the visual weight of the overall look.

  • Placement Tip: Position your anchor first. Because this piece acts as your centre of gravity, everything else will build out organically from here.

  • In the photo below, look for the central piece to see how it grounds the entire look. I used The Magnetic Hammered Petal Brooch.

Step 2: Add the Counterweight

Once your anchor is set, it’s time to play with texture, contrast, and scale. You want your counterweight pieces to complement the anchor rather than compete with it. Look for airy silhouettes, minimalist lines, or delicate accents—like the pearl pins featured here.

For instance, the gold-toned, wire-looped floral blossom featured below makes an excellent counterweight. Its lightweight, open structure introduces essential negative space, beautifully balancing out the denser, more sculptural statement brooches in the stack.

  • Styling Tip: I love using double-sided pearl pins because they introduce a classic texture while doing some major functional heavy lifting. Here, I used pearl pins to secure the blazer lapels together, creating a sharp, modern silhouette.

Step 3: Introduce Movement

The final step to mastering the art of the brooch stack is all about motion. Introduce fluid elements like liquid chains draped across a lapel, or swinging charms that catch the light and move as you do.

In this look, I used a utility draped pin to add that perfect touch of effortless movement. The exact same formula applies to a pocket lapel, as pictured below, where I styled a double-pin brooch with a built-in chain connector to span the gap beautifully.

A Few Rules of Thumb for Brooch Stacking:

  • Mix Your Metals (Yes, Really): Don't be afraid to pair heavy silver hardware with warm, brushed gold. The tension of industrial meets elegant is exactly what makes a brooch stack feel contemporary and fresh instead of dated.

  • Opt for Fabric-Safe Magnets: If you are worried about delicate fabrics, look for pieces with strong magnetic backings (like our Magnetic Edit) which allow you to stack and layer heavy silhouettes without a single pinhole.

  • Shop Your Own Closet: The beauty of this styling formula is that it works with what you already own. Dig into your jewelry box, pull out the vintage brooches you haven't worn in years, and try grouping them by scale rather than matching their styles.

  • Try Earrings: Speaking of shopping your own closet, statement earrings also function as beautiful make-shift brooches. I often use The Pearl Edit Ear Jacket in my stacks. Try using a pearl ear jacket at the very tip of your collar, or nestle a stud into the cluster as a subtle accent.

  • Composition First, Pinning Second: Always lay your blazer flat on a table or bed and arrange your brooch stack on the lapel to perfect the composition before you begin pinning.

The next time you reach for your go-to blazer, try this formula. Experiment with the placement, embrace the asymmetry, and remember: in approachable maximalism, there are no strict rules—only beautiful combinations waiting to happen.
